A good day...

Its been a great day today. Jonas has been such a sweet blessing to me. He has laughed more than I have ever heard him laugh. He is a serious child and it can take an act of congress to get him to cackle. He has cackled and cackled today. I have loved every minute of it. I love the kisses that he now offers daily and I love how he walks around the house like he owns the place. He is growing so fast it is scary.

Also on a side note...I decided a while back we are going to attempt potty training earlier than the national average. I have a theory that the diaper industry encourages later potty training these days, to make money off the already sacrificial parents of today. So, at 17 months we got the potty. I am a stay at home mom and feel I don't have much of an excuse to not take breaks throughout the day to help train my child. Also, with the encouragement of my grandmother, we hope to accomplish this task at least by age two. (maybe earlier) My grandmother raised 5 children, 3 boys, 2 girls. She had every one of them potty trained at 18 months. That was probably the average back then. Who wanted to deal with wet and soiled cloth diapers every day? I would have rushed to have them trained as well! I am happy to say in the couple weeks we have been training, he has gone # 1 and #2 in the potty on more than one occasion. Today we reached a milestone of going #1 two times in one day! I'm not wore out yet, but this definitely takes discipline and cutting the diaper budget out a year earlier than most people will be SO REWARDING!
We love you little man!

Wow - it's great that you are attempting this feat with Jonas:). I plan to try with Michael in January, once our company leaves. He's gone once on the potty but he's been kind of stubborn about wanting to go on a regular basis. I honestly have not had time to devote to potty training hard-core. We've just finished a big renovation project and that was incredibly time consuming - whew!

I need to do some more reading but I am NOT going to make his potty training experience a long and drawn out one - months and months and months. I plan to check into Dr. Phil's method as I've heard awesome things about how well it works. I would prefer that the process take only a few days at the most. I've talked to veteran moms who say that their son or daughter trained in only one day - I guess that I can only hope and pray that this is the case for us.

I DO NOT want two in diapers so I do plan to have him trained by the time our baby comes along. He totally understands the concept - he's just a booger:).

More power to you Sarah!!! I keep saying, "I probably need to start getting serious about this potty thing!" But, alas...I'm still not serious about it! Isabelle LOVES the potty but hasn't figured out how to "go" yet. She sometimes says, "I go potty" and goes in the bathroom. I'm usually preoccupied with Ireland and say..."that's what you have a diaper on for...just go!!"

Actually, my plan is to start after the holidays and try to get her potty trained in January. We'll see how it goes! :)

Merry Christmas to you!!

I haven't read the Dr. Phil method. I'll have to look it up. Jonas doesn't have the understanding a two year old has so it is constant repetition for us. I try to take him every hour while he is awake. And I'm not pushing trying to take him while doing errands or even at Grandmas house yet. Barker baby # 2 is NOT on the way yet but I definitely want Jonas trained before hand. (just in case you were wondering) :-)

That will be great if he catches on fast! How nice to be able to have him out of diapers. I hope it goes good for you.

I am not very good at training early, but I definitely think it can be done!

We have started with Amelia too -- she hasn't gone in the potty yet, but she asks to sit on it, so I just keep putting her up there. Isabella was fully trained, no accidents by just a couple months over 2. We started her at about 19 months as well and she would go great when we were at home, but of course it was the running around and not being able to tell us BEFORE she had to go at that age. I'm hoping that Amelia catches on and is as easy as Isabella was, sure would be nice to have her out of diapers. :) If he's going in the potty when you put him up there, he'll learn quickly, once he gets the total bladder control and can tell you. I've had friends whose kids were still not potty trained in their 3s and I REALLY hope that Amelia trains easy so that isn't the case for her. :) Love the pic of him by the way, he's such a cutie and really growing up!!!
